At Kirtlington CE Primary, we want to develop in all children a love of reading and inspire children to read through our reading challenges, author visits and World Book day events. There are a wide range of reading opportunities for children throughout the day in the form of guided reading with an adult, independent reading, as well as listening to stories through assemblies or in class. High quality class texts are carefully chosen to link to class topics and to inspire children’s ideas for writing.
The programmes of study for reading at key stages 1 and 2 consist of two dimensions:
- Word reading
- Comprehension (both listening and reading).
To develop children’s reading skills in Reception and Key Stage 1, we use a variety of highly recognized reading schemes such as the Oxford Reading Tree in order to provide children with reading material that is pitched at the right level with good progression in reading skills.
When children become independent readers, they are encouraged to choose books from their class libraries or recommended year group specific lists to ensure they are continuing to receive a broad, enriching reading experience. Children at every stage are encouraged to read regularly at home in order to consolidate the skills they are learning in school. Children have reading diaries to record their reading at home.
Good comprehension skills draw upon linguistic knowledge (in particular of vocabulary and grammar) and on knowledge of the world. Comprehension skills are taught on a regular basis and are developed through children’s experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction. All children are encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction in order to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world they live in, establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum. Reading widely and often will increase children’s vocabulary and enable them to develop the skills to explain their understanding and ideas clearly.
