Short story competition

Oxfordshire Libraries Short Story Competition 2026

Celebrating new writing from around Oxfordshire: tell your own story

Competition dates: Monday 8 September 2025 – Sunday 9 November 2025

The Library Service are delighted to announce that their established writing competition is relaunching on 8 September 2025. Children aged 7-11 are invited to write a short story up to 1,000 words. Other categories are for 12 to 17-year-olds and 18+ (short story up to 3,000 words).

Please encourage your children to join in. It is the perfect activity encouraging children to build on the creative writing skills practised in class – to then explore at home and in their own time.

Inspire children to tell their own story and write for fun. They could become a published author!

Winners in each category will see their story published as an eBook and eAudiobook, available to members of Oxfordshire Libraries to borrow in 2026.

Children’s entries need to have parent/carer consent. Full terms and conditions, as well as instructions on how to submit entries, can be found on the Oxfordshire Libraries website: www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/shortstorycompetition.
